Ministering in the King’s Canopy
Updated: Nov 26, 2020
In the Old Testament, the people of Israel were blessed with an amazing gift, to be and build the very Tabernacle of God, where He abides with them in the tent He designed. As part of the orders given Moses and the elders, there was very particular role for the sons of Levi, the son of Jacob/Israel. The priestly mantle falling to Moses’ brother Aaron, and his two sons Eleazar and Ithamar, with the latter (amongst other duties) responsible for overseeing the construction, and maintenance of the Tabernacle as they wandered around the wilderness…and beyond. The book of Numbers, chapters 3 and 4, in the Bible provides some insight into this priestly ministry. Several Levite families, under the oversight of Ithamar, had specific duties, including:
‘The tabernacle, the tent with its covering, the screen for the door of the tabernacle of meeting, 26 the screen for the door of the court, the hangings of the court which are around the tabernacle and the altar, and their cords, according to all the work relating to them’.
‘The boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, its utensils, all the work relating to them, and the pillars of the court all around, with their sockets, their pegs, and their cords’.
While other families had duties relating to what went on inside the Tabernacles, those under Ithamar’s supervision were called to minister into the canopy, and its covering of the Lord’s presence with His people. And while this pertained largely to the ‘tent of meeting’ that was constructed as the place of habitation of the Lord above the ark of the covenant, and a place of meeting with Moses and the priest, there was also an implicit understanding that the Lord desire was to ‘tabernacle’ with Israel, and thus such a ministry must have also had a metaphoric understanding for them, and the Israelites, and extending beyond the tent to them as a people. Consider these verses below, and the others referenced.
And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. According to all that I show you, that is, the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings, just so you shall make it. (Exodus 25:8,9)
Judah became His sanctuary, and Israel His dominion. (Psalm 114:2)
“’And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” (Exodus 19:6)
We now understand the work of the building of the tabernacle, ark, and priestly roles was a copy and shadow of heavenly things. With them the Lord revealed, or foreshadowed, His kingdom plans. Now He has made much of this manifest, for He dwells with us, through Christ and the Holy Spirit, abides in us, and we in Him, and that He has poured our His Spirit on all who believe, and not just an elect few. In this the new covenant, we are seated with Him in heavenly places, and ministering as He calls us, in an even broader understanding than that of the Old Testament priesthood, which ironically is still much broader than the current way of many churches, which limit priesthood to the Pastor/Minister, the associates, and maybe the youth pastor and worship leader. We need to open our heart, and understand the call of ministry to us His royal priesthood has many aspects, and some will be called to minister in the heavenlies in a way that was foreshadowed by the ministry roles outlined by God through Moses and King David.
So, as hinted at through the ministry of Ithamar and various Levite families, there is a ministry for some to build with God a covering for His people, and the place where He abides in a specific way with them on earth, that extends beyond the individual, the church, and covers the region as He defines. The pattern of this Tabernacle (Canopy) is as He reveals, and some of those who are operate in the seer prophetic gift will be given the role to survey out the blueprint revealed for this heavenly covering, from heaven, and with others prophetically intercede the words and heavenly design to be made manifest on earth as it is in heaven. This is in many ways a faith ministry, operating in the unseen realm, and largely more about witnessing to the canopy the Lord has constructed, and as it is observed, so in that agreement it is made real in our lives.
I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah (Psalms 61:4)
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. (Psalms 91:1-6)
In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:9-10)
I will love You, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (Psalms 18:1-2)
This ministry starts first with drawing close to our Lord, understanding He abides in us, and we in Him. We understand that a good place is to be under the canopy of God, the shelter of His wings. As we abide in this place of His presence, so the Lord makes manifest on earth as it is in heaven, and a covering is extended over where we abide, and thus we intercede for our neighbourhoods. A special grace has been given to some who operate in this ministry as a type of prophetic office, however there is also the gifting and anointing available for those to intercede with the Lord in like manner as equipped by the Holy Spirit.
So, if you are feeling to drive a circuit around your region, with the Lord’s word and insight for the area you have been assigned to on your heart; and, even to stand on prayer watches (specific high places) as Christ leads, and pray with God’s vision and word for your street, neighbourhood, region, city, and beyond, do not be alarmed, and think it so odd, rather trust in His anointing and leading upon your life. You are called to a valid and special prophetic and intercessory priestly ministry, serve Him, and trust the Lord, looking not from the earth’s perspective, but from heaven. Looking not for man’s validation, but rather trusting in your identity in God. Your very acts could be intercession, and even helping to build a covering in the heavenlies that changes the atmosphere of the area or protects it from destruction and death.
The tools of this ministry are varied, often including prayer, intercession, prophetic acts, history research, prophecy, mapping, and the practicing of various Holy Spirit gifts. There is more to be shared on this topic for another time. In the meanwhile, if all this witnesses to your spirit, and perhaps helps explains some of your unconventional way, be encourage. Hold true to who God calls you to be, and press in…it could be the very thing the Lord uses protect your region from tragic outcomes often associated with disasters. We have witnessed this time and again in our lives, and believe that others are called to this ministry.
