In the Secret Place
When considering the recent blocking by Twitter of a certain famous person (President Trump), the shutting down of Parler by Amazon, and apparent behaviours by social and web platforms to filter out certain conservative voices, while perhaps allowing others, we should become rightly concerned. And yet, perhaps those of us involved in online Christian ministry might need to balance our response to these behaviours with these words from our Lord Jesus Christ.
“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.” (Matthew 6:5-7)
Freedoms are under attack, both in word and movement. Governments, certain political voices, and Oligarchs such as the ‘social media platforms’, are at the vanguard of this attack. People are born for freedom, and no amount of silencing will stop that…only create greater underground pressure. However, we need to remember those final famous words of the Lord’s prayer.
“For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” (Matthew 6:13b)
While justice needs to be served, and there will be those anointed to pursue such action, it is the Lord’s to bring vengeance, and all kings and authorities will be brought before Him. Our motivations cannot be about our public profile, with our loud public prayers and Christian displays on the internet street corner. We should remember our Lord Jesus does not need the Internet to spread the good news of the gospel of God’s grace, He could cause even the rocks to cry out. It is for all His glory…not ours.
Let us come again to the secret place of prayer, there the Lord will hear us and openly He will act for His glory, and His love.
